WASHINGTON (December 22, 1999) -- Walter E. Grazer has been appointed Policy Advisor for European Affairs in the U.S. Catholic Conference's Office of International Justice and Peace. The announcement of the appointment was made by Gerard Powers, director of the international office.
"I am delighted to have Mr. Grazer assume this position because of his deep commitment to his faith, his knowledge of Catholic social teaching, and his many years of experience working on issues of justice and peace," Mr. Powers said.
Mr. Grazer will continue to direct the bishops' Environmental Justice Program, which has been reshaped to integrate it more deeply into the domestic and international policy work of the Department of Social Development and World Peace. He was named its director in 1993, when the program began.
The appointment was applauded by John Carr, head of the bishops' Secretariat for Social Development and World Peace.
"We are delighted that Walt Grazer will be able to continue his important leadership on environmental justice issues, while bringing his considerable experience and expertise to the bishops' work on European and other pressing international issues," Mr. Carr said.
Mr. Grazer has been at the U.S. Catholic Conference for eighteen years. Prior to directing the Environmental Justice Program, he was Deputy Director of Migration and Refugee Services, and a Policy Advisor for Agriculture and Rural Development. Before joining the USCC, he was Director of Social Ministry for the Diocese of Richmond. Mr. Grazer holds Masters Degrees in International Relations and Social Work. He is married and has two children.
